In a decisive move to strengthen Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, the Ghana Chamber of Mines has partnered with the Ghana Police Service for a Special Mining Operations Course aimed at building the tactical capabilities of law enforcement officers operating in mining zones.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy by the Chamber to curtail the economic, environmental, and security threats posed by illegal mining activities, which continue to impact members of the Chamber and jeopardize community safety.
Speaking at the closing session of the training programme on Sunday 13th July 2025, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey emphasized the seriousness of the challenge, describing illegal mining as not just a regulatory concern but a matter of national security.
“We have a tough task to address the illegal mining issue. Ghana is losing so much money through galamsey, and we are relying on the Police to help the country fight this menace. The illegal miners are now armed. We’re seeing assault weapons being used, and this underscores the need for professionalism in how we respond,” he said.
Dr. Ashigbey added that the stakes have never been higher, warning that failure to act decisively could have long-term consequences for future generations.
“We need to find ways to address this now and for future generations. Mining must be done professionally, and that requires a trained, prepared, and well-resourced police force.”
Also addressing the gathering, Mr. George Anyema, Senior Manager for Security at AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem, highlighted the operational realities on the ground and called for enhanced tactical readiness.
“We need our officers to reinforce tactical moves on the ground, and we shall succeed. This is not a task for the police alone. We need broad support from all stakeholders. Together, we can protect our environment, our economy, and ensure safety in mining communities.”
Mr. Anyama emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, community vigilance, and sustained funding to complement the ongoing police training efforts.
The Special Mining Operations Course is designed to equip police personnel with:
- Advanced tactical and combat skills suited for high-risk environments
- Techniques for intelligence gathering and operational planning
- Knowledge of mining laws and environmental regulations
- Community engagement approaches to foster local cooperation
The training modules were delivered by a team of specialised instructors from the High-Risk Operational Training Unit of the Police Service with experience in counterinsurgency, terrain operations, and conflict-zone policing.
