AGA IDUAPRIEM TO INVEST $4 MILLION IN SOCIAL INVESTMENTS IN 2025

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem (AGA Iduapriem) has announced a landmark $4 million commitment to community development projects in 2025, nearly doubling its 2024 spend of $1.9 million. This was revealed during a high-level visit by the Ghana Chamber of Mines to the company’s operations in Tarkwa.

The funds will support a range of initiatives focused on local economic development, education, healthcare, and infrastructure within host communities. Acting Managing Director, Abraham Osei Badu, explained that the investment reflects the company’s long-term vision for inclusive and sustainable mining.

“We are committed to improving the lives of people in our host communities. This investment is about building a shared future where both the mine and the people prosper,” said Mr. Osei Badu.
AGA’s 2025 plan includes the relocation and resettlement of the Teberebie community to enable mine expansion. A new site is currently being reviewed following a mutual agreement with community leaders and compensation payments.

Beyond social infrastructure, AGA has also stepped up its local procurement efforts, significantly reducing its dependence on international vendors since 2016. The mine is also using sports as a tool for youth development, with plans to sign an MoU with Medeama Sporting Club to enhance talent development in the Tarkwa area.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Officer Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ahmed Nantogmah lauded AGA for its proactive community support and encouraged other member companies to emulate the example.

“This is what responsible mining looks like,” said the Chamber’s COO. “AGA’s investment demonstrates that mining can and must improve the lives of host communities while driving national development.”

He further urged the government to ring-fence the Growth and Sustainability Levy to ensure such funds directly benefit mining communities.

With growing concerns about urban pressure in Tarkwa, illegal mining threats, and community resettlement challenges, AGA’s $4 million social investment strategy is a bold step toward building resilient and mutually beneficial partnerships with stakeholders.

AGA Iduapriem continues to play a leading role in aligning mining operations with Ghana’s social development priorities a model the entire sector can learn from.
