The National Mines First Aid and Safety Competition, an annual inter-mines safety flagship programme, is designed to educate mine workers, host communities and the citizenry on basic first aid tips as well as foster consciousness of safety in their everyday lives. The competition is organized by the Chamber of Mines and the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission (IDMC) with support from the St. John Ambulance Service. Among other purposes, the competition seeks to:
• Underscore the importance that mining companies attach to safety issues
• Educate employees and host communities on health, first aid and safety practices
The competition, which has the official backing of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, is in two parts:
• Zonal oral first aid and safety contest broadcast live on GTV and rebroadcast on regional radio networks of GBC (What Do you Know quiz show); and
• The zonal practical competition on mine sites.
While the zonal oral quiz contest will be on national television and radio, the practical contests will take place at the host communities of three mining companies.
